Reflux Elimination System: A Natural Balance
Skim through the health section of your trusted newspaper and you'll see a resurgence in stories about acid reflux. That's a disorder in which stomach acid enters the esophagus, with symptoms like heartburn, sore throat, burping and regurgitation.
Reflux hurts. There's no question about that. And many Americans reach for proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and related antacids to suppress acid production and relieve their pain. Yet, according to a new study released by American researchers, that's not only ineffective as a long-term treatment to address the causes of reflux, it could also be deadly
The Study
Stomach acid kills pathogens. Among them, clostridium difficile or C. diff., a persistent bacteria linked to diarrhea and intestinal disease.
The American study consisted of 485 patients with C diff infections at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego between 2004 and 2008. Almost half of the patients had previously been prescribed either proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec or histamine-2 antagonists. Both medications are acid suppressants that, as the description suggests, inhibit production of stomach acid.
With less stomach acid, the C diff infections spread in many patients. Twenty-three of the patients involved in the study died from their C diff infections. The kicker? Nineteen of them had taken prescription acid suppressants within 90 days prior to their hospital admittance.
This isn't the first study to link PPIs with adverse health effects. A recent Japanese study noted that patients taking PPIs were more likely to develop diarrhea. But it's notable in the sense that this is the first study to link antacids to mortality. And judging from related complications suffered from other patients in the study, it won't be the last.
Um, Little Help?
To people with acid reflux, this is an issue. After all, reflux hurts. Heartburn? Chronic core throat? Ouch!
The problem, as we've seen, is that antacids, including PPIs, are designed to suppress production of stomach acid. In that environment, toxins can thrive, and expose the host to a variety of ailments, from diarrhea to GI inflammation. And, er, in some patients, a slight case of death.
But excessive stomach acid is a common cause of reflux symptoms, including that dreaded heartburn. So what's it supposed to be - go through the pain and discomfort of reflux or risk the health effects linked to antacids?
Actually, neither. Because a natural, and frankly, more effective solution to acid reflux may already exist. The solution is Digestive Science Reflux Elimination System. And the relief is lasting.
